September 2002

Dear Praying Friend,

God has been doing some amazing things in our lives this last month. In our June letter, we asked you to pray for Becky’s Mom. Becky also was praying and asking God to show her definitely if it was His will for her to go home and see Mom that He would make it plain to us. The middle of July, Joan Smith, from Bingham Academy, asked Becky if she would be willing to make a trip home to the States to bring back excess baggage for the school. How definite can you get? We were amazed and praised God for Becky’s chance to go home and see Mom. She left on August 6 and returned August 31 to Ethiopia. But the story doesn’t stop there!

The whole trip felt to Becky like she was sitting in the back seat of the car and God was doing the driving. She was along for the ride and many times, she reminded herself of that as she wondered what was next!

Becky was able to attend Amy Scheel’s wedding to Kevin Wells in Rochester, NY. Amy was in Bingham, boarding with us during her grade school years, so it was very special time for both Amy and Becky. The wedding was wonderful!

Mom was up walking when Becky arrived and when she left Mom was only able to move around in bed with help. Becky was able to relieve her sister. We soon realized that Mom needed more than just family to care for her.

Now, we have hired help for 24 hours 7 days a week. We also have Hospice coming in to help us with medical problems and many other services. Mom appeared to be dying just as Becky was scheduled to return to Ethiopia. You can imagine Becky’s agony as she decided what to do. But, God had taken her to Charlotte, NC at that time and given her peace about returning to Ethiopia. Becky and our daughter Faith made a quick trip by car Wednesday and Thursday to visit Mom one last time. This second picture of Mom is with Becky’s brother and sister the day before Becky came back to Ethiopia.

Friday morning, three hours ahead of time, our daughter, Faith, took Becky to the airport for her return to Ethiopia.

They expected to see 33 boxes of excess baggage waiting for Becky to take. Alas, no boxes! They waited for 10 minutes and asked God what to do. He gave the idea and the phone number of the man who was going to be bringing the boxes. When Becky called Stuart he said, “We heard you weren’t going so the boxes are not loaded in the car. Give us an hour and we’ll be there!” Wow, those boxes went through the check-in and with time to spare! Also, since SIM heard Becky wasn’t going they tried to call the airlines and cancel her flight! BUT God did not let them get through to the airline! Becky just stood there calmly through the whole thing marveling at God’s hand on the steering wheel! The peace that passes understanding!

It actually didn’t stop there. God gave her a chance to talk with Anthony on the plane. Anthony’s sister is a Christian and has been witnessing to him, as well. He is a Catholic and considers himself a good person. Pray for his salvation.

It wasn’t over yet! Waiting to get on the plane in Chicago, she thought she heard her name called. She went up to the check-in at the gate and asked if they had called her name. They said, “No.” But, she asked them to look at her papers and see if everything was in order. They looked and said, “Yes, we do need to talk with you. How many boxes do you have and where is your receipt?” So on showing the receipt they told her she hadn’t paid enough. Becky had time to go way out to the front of the airport to pay the additional charges.

It was a wonderful experience to sit and watch God work. Now that we are back in the “routine”, please continue to pray for us that we will sit and let God do the driving! Even just while writing this prayer letter, the computer crashed two times. So after talking to God about it, now all is well. We want God to receive all the glory for His mighty working. Praise God with us!

To God be the glory,

Harold & Becky Jongeward
