Amharic Bible Schools Trip
March 11 – 20, 2003, Harold and Becky Jongeward traveled
with Girma Hanano, the Amharic Bible Schools Coordinator for Kale Heywet (Word
of Life) Church to visit 29 Amharic Bible Schools in Southern and Southwestern
Ethiopia.
- We started
and ended in Addis Ababa, the capital city.

- The
first Bible School we visited was Arsi Negele. Girma is the man in the blue vest. No afternoon classes therefore no students.

- We
visited three Bible Schools in Awasa.
For this night Bible School, the students sit on benches.

- This
old lady watched as we visited the Gorbe Golola Bible School.

- Everywhere
we went we experienced Ethiopian hospitality. In Soyama, we ate national food by the light of a kerosene
lamp.

- Girma’s
son, Stephanos rode with us from Soyama to Soddo. Here we’re overlooking the Rift Valley
near Konso.

- Chencha
Bible School library was well organized and used by the whole community.

- A
local Kucha hut. The Dosha Bible
School uses a hut like this for the student dorm and another one for the
teachers’ lounge.

- Sunday
in Sawla Harold and Becky visited this church of a thousand while Girma
went to another. Altogether the
town of 30,000 people has six churches.
For lack of elsewhere to sit, kids sit on the edge of the platform
facing the audience. The offering
box is just behind them.

- Waka,
with 10 students, was the smallest Bible School we visited.

- Durami
was the largest at 105 students.
Durami is where we served Oct 1974 – June 1976. In fact, Harold taught Bible School
classes in this very classroom.
